A guide to Assassin’s Creed Valhalla’s Ravensthorpe settlement with an in-depth overview of each building, priority for which to build and more!
Assassin’s Creed Valhalla offers a unique gameplay mechanic revolving around you building your own Settlement in the game. Called Ravensthorpe, this place is an integral part of the game. It not only serves as a resting point but all the buildings and bonusses have a function.
So it is not just for aesthetics, they are integral to the storyline and the character’s upgrades. This guide will help you better understand how the Settlement functions, which buildings to build first and why what bonuses and perks you gain by doing so and how to unlock the full potential of Eivor’s new home in England!

What is Ravensthorpe
After a short time spent in Norway, Assassin’s Creed Valhalla takes you to a journey to England. This is where you will spend the vast majority of time as you play the game. You can quick travel (teleport) back and forth at any time as you please.
When do you get your Settlement
As soon as you arrive at the shores, you decide to settle in the old village established by Ragnar’s sons. You find the place completely deserted and decide to revive it. To fit its new purpose and to give this place a new life you decide to name it after your own clan – Ravensthorpe.
For a Settlement to function, it needs first and foremost people to populate it, but it also needs a number of important buildings and structures. This is where your actions are required and your decisions come into play!
The settlement should not just be a settlement, it should be a place where you feel at home. And that is what the creators of the game succeeded in doing. Start out small but before you know it you will have a complete hub where you greet new people, old people, pick up quests and all that will come while you continue to raid for more resources for all the upgrades you need.
Ravensthorpe Levels and Tiers explained
As you play you can both level up and tier up your settlement. There are six levels you can go through, staring from Level 1, of course. To check the current level and progress to the next one, open your map and hover over the Settlement Icon. In the lower right corner of the screen you will see a notification that looks like this:
Leveling the Settlement is done by building structures and completing main story arcs in England – some of them will directly reward you Settlement Experience Points. To find out which regions story arks in England will reward you with Settlement XP, check the Alliance Table in your Longhouse.
Each two levels you unlock a new tier. Tiers allow you to build different types of buildings that serve different purposes for you and for Ravensthorpe.
How to build things in your Settlement
Before there is a building in your Settlement, an NPC will show up and ask of you to build them their building, so they can start contributing to the Settlement.
Find a large or small hut and look for a wooden sign in front of it. Click on it to see the requirements for this specific building to be built and decide when you can afford it.
Below is an example of a building waiting to be built (the Cattle Farm from Tier III)
If you click on the sign post in front of the hut, you will see a stats screen like the one below:
And here is what the complete building looks like:
All of this happens with just the click of a button. Further below in this guide I have an in-depth overview of each building and how exactly it benefits you and your Settlement to have it built and available.
How to decorate your Settlement
If you wish to give your settlement an additional layer of charisma and personality, you can decorate it with cosmetic items you earn from playing the game or purchase from the Ubisoft cash shop.
Find these statues across the settlement, click on them to open up an additional menu and choose what type of a decoration you can place near it. If you wish to check out some of them, take a look at the Ultimate Pack overview. The Ultimate Pack is available with the Ultimate Edition of AC Valhalla, but can be purchased separately as well.
These decorations bring no special bonuses and perks, they just make the place look more stylish.
Resources you need to upgrade your Settlement
The settlement is of the utmost importance but what materials do you need in order to build buildings in your settlement?
Supplies
You can find supplies almost anywhere in the game. They are the easiest to get. You see a golden icon on your map, you can be sure that it contains supplies. Still, the best place to find them in abundance are Raids.
Raw Materials
These are a bit more difficult to get. You can only get them through raids. More specifically; you can only get them by raiding monestaries. Those are the only places where you can get the raw materials.
While it is worth raiding for Raw Materials in the early stages of the game, especially if you want to unlock buildings in your settlement, take a good look at the Power Level of the raid locations before you head in. They are displayed on your map, in the lower right corner. The higher the level of the area and the lower yours is, taking a hit would inflict mote damage, in some cases even gets you one shot by a simple soldier.
The three Tiers your Settlement expands through
When you first arrive to Ravensthorpe, it has nothing but an empty and deserted longhouse and not much else except terrain. Your job is to take good care of the settlement and upgrade it gradually until it becomes a nice living place and a trade hub.
There are three different tiers of buildings in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla’s Ravensthorpe.
You start out small, of course, and then as time progresses and your resources pile up you will expand and upgrade. Each building or establishment costs two unique resources that you can collect by raiding towns, monasteries and other locations in England as well as exploring the vast open world of the game. More about the resources later.
Later in the guide I have a more in-depth overview of each building. Here is a short overview of the three main tiers Ravensthorpe should go through:
- Tier I – The most essential buildings are unlocked and available for building. You should build most if not all of these buildings sooner or later. The sooner – the better. Each building costs 400 Supplies and 30 Raw Materials.
- Tier II – another layer of new buildings is unlocked, more expensive and with additional features. Each building costs 600 Supplies and 45 Raw Materials.
- Tier III – the smaller farms and family houses are unlocked and available for building, providing additional bonuses to the Feast Buff. Each building costs 800 Supplies and 60 Raw Materials. Upgrades to the Farms cost 1200 Suplies and 85/90 Raw Materials.
Tier one
The first tier buildings cost 400 supply and 30 raw materials and these are the basic buildings that you will need. The list is compiled in order of importance.
- Black Smith – This is the place for your next tier upgrades for your gear and weapons.
- Hidden Ones Bureau – The Hidden Ones Bureau will trigger the main storyline of the Order of the Ancients and gives you the Leap of Faith ability.
- Stable and Aviary – This is where you can get your mounts like horses or the wolf from the Berserker Pack. But also get animal training for more stamina, survivability and swimming as well as apply new cosmetics for your mount and your ravan.
- Barracks – This is where you can manage your Viking crew and also create and fully customize a Jomsviking , a special soldier to join you on your raids, or you can recruit others to join you.
- Trading Post – You can buy resources like Runes, arrows, materials and new weapons here but also sell excess baggage and Runes.
Tier two
The second tier buildings will cost a bit more to build but it is well worth it. These buildings cost 600 supplies and 45 raw materials. The list is compiled in order of importance
- Fishing Hut – Unlocks the fishing lin and you can trade fish for material resources or keep the fish in your rations bag for later use.
- Brewery – Increases the Feast buff for Eivor to give them 25+ health.
- Bakery – Like the Brewery, this also boosts the Feast buff for 25+ health
- Shipyard – Customise and buy aesthetics for your Viking ship
- Tattoo Shop – Unlocks tattoo designs and hair for Eivor.
- Museum – A place where you can trade Roman Artifacts for camp decorations and to trigger a small storyline.
Tier three
The third and last tier of upgrades are the following buildings which all come at the cost of 800 supplies and 60 raw materials.
- Cartographer – Provides you with maps for materials such as Carbon Ingots and locations of supplies and raw materials as well as collectibles.
- Cattle Farm – Increases the Feast buff, giving +3 ranged damage
- Grain Farm – Increases the Feast buff, giving +3 bonus for Eivor’s armor. You can also find plenty of Rations to fill up your small bag for the travels ahead.
- Alvis and Holger’s House – Increases the Feast buff, giving +3.8 assassination damage
- Fowl Farm – Increases the Feast buff, giving +3 melee damage
In order to gain resources you will have to go on raids and raid the monestaries to get the supplies and raw materials you need. Another way to get the supplies to pay close attention to your mini map and check where the gold icons are.
Overview of the Buildings in your Settlement
This segment of the guide will give you a better idea of why each building is important and what benefits you will earn from building it earlier or later in your adventures.
Most of the NPCs will take you on a quest of their own shortly after you build them their establishments or if not that, they will start offering you goodies and special bonuses. It’s worth to build every single house and building in your Settlement Ravensthorpe, but not all are equally important.
The Longhouse in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla
The Longhouse in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla is the most important building. From there on out you will expand your settlement.
The viking longhouse consists of the following rooms/areas:
- The central feasting hall
- The throne room
- Your personal room
- The Alliance Map
The feasting hall can give you temporary buffs which come in handy (more about the buff mechanic later in the guide). The throne room, while not as cool as the Iron Throne, is still amazing. Your personal room is very important, there are things you can do there. The Alliance Map is the most important room of the Viking Longhouse in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla.
The personal room is where there are several bulletpoints for things to keep an eye on. Such as what building still need to be build like the Seer’s House or the Cartographer’s. So if you are unsure of what is left for you to build in the Ravensthorpe settlement then just head over to your personal room and click to see the bullet points that need your attention.
Something else in your room is the mailbox. Mail will be delivered to your room where you can get thank you notes or new missions.
If you are heavily injured and have run out of rations for you to heal up then just get some sleep. Sleep will heal you to full. And around your settlement there is plenty of food to fill up your rations bag.
The Blacksmith
The Blacksmith is you get your upgrades for your gear and weapons in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla.
Gunnar, the blacksmith, will keep your gear up to date and when he does you are able to personally upgrade your gear yourself a little more since Gunnar’s work will add more slots for you to do so. As payment Gunnar will take rare ingots. The upgrades Gunnar provides are not just more slots for you to upgrade personally but also to augment your gear as it will also open up more Rune slots for you to add to your gear and weapons.
The Blacksmith will also be the first thing you will build since it is the most important one to have in your settlement. You will need your gear and weapons to be top notch in order to progress throughout the game without gear being an issue.
The Hidden Ones Bureau
The Hidden Ones Bureau would be second on the list of buildings to build in the Ravensthorpe settlement for several reasons.
First of all it will trigger theOrder of the Ancients questline. Just like in the previous installment of the game you will go out and assassinate several targets to progress the story. It is much like killing off the Cult of Cosmos in AC Odyssey and the Order of the Ancients in AC Origins.
Second, you will unlock the Assassin’s Creed franchise trademark of the Leap of Faith. So basically jumping down from insane heights only to fall in a stack of hay.
You can give Hytham (the Assassin, who settles in your village and supports your journey with tips and ideas among other things) medallions and codex pages to unlock special abilities.
Unlike the previous installments, the Hidden Ones Bureau is really essential to the story. You will have to go back quite regularly.
For fans of Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, the quest “A Brier History of the Hidden Ones” is an absolute “must do”. While doing it, you may as well pick up the Hidden Ones Armor and Weapon Set – one of the best armor sets in the game.
The Stable in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla
With the stable unlocked you can customize your mounts. So your horses and the Wolf if you are the proud owner of the Berserker pack. Even the raven is customizable.
The most important part of having access to the stable is that you will be able to train your animals for instance to swim or have better stamina and to survive longer when under duress. So even if you are chased by a large mob of soldiers, you stand a fighting chance while on the run.
The Fishing Hut
The Fishing Hut is run by Merton and his grandson Arth. Once you unlock the fishing hut you will be able to fish. Trading the fish with Merton and Arth will give you Runes, Ingots and customization kits.
Another advantage of having the fishing reel is that you will always have a full rations bag since you can also eat the fish to regenerate health.
The Cartographer
While it does not seem like it is something you may need, you should not underestimate the usefulness of the Cartographer. Like mentioned in the Assassin’s Creed Valhalla Starter Guide (No Spoilers) guide, you will need to gather a lot of resources to keep expanding your settlement but also to upgrade your gear and weapons.
I have placed this higher in the list of “things to build first” because I expect most of you would enjoy the exploration element of the game. If you prefer to focus on the story and leave the exploration for a much alter point in your journey, the Cartographer may not serve you that well.
You can also always check up the many Armor Sets and Weapons and Shileds Guides here on VULKK.com to find out the locations of all interesting gear in AC Valhalla. Most of the hidden gear items can be obtained quite easily and early on, giving you an edge in combat.
The Cartographer can also help you with that since Olsen, the name of the NPC who will join you, will sell you maps with locations of resources and materials such as Carbon Ingots and Raw Materials hidden in England. It is definitely recommended that you get this one quickly for the aforementioned reasons.
Trading Post
The trading post is another building that you may find beneficial for your settlement. Assassin’s Creed Valhalla really has gone to great lengths to make any building in your settlement to a certain degree.
The trading post is no different! Below is an overview of part of the collection of items available there. In case you are wondering if the gear available there is cool and worth it, check out the Weapons and Shields Guide to see the stats of the items available at the Shop.
With a trading post you can sell your excess baggage like broken bows or bowls. But also your Runes when they have outlived their usefulness. You can also buy arrows, food and crafting goods. Next to other stuff like Ingots, Iron Ores , Runes and schematics.
Every single shop in the game has the exact same offerings and they are based on your progress in the game. If you want to save time and have a convenient shop right in your own Settlement, then you may want to build it sooner. Or you can consider giving priority to different features and perks from other buildings that will more directly impact your Eivor and the settlement as a whole.
Once you upgrade your village to the final level 6, you will be able to buy even more and rare items like Skill Scrolls (up to 5) and Tungsten Ingots.
The Seer in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla
The Seer in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla plays a large role in the story. The Seer is used as a plot device to start the journey of Eivor on a path of (self) discovery which leads to the Ancient Order. But also gives access to the realm of the gods of Asgard and in the long term access to Jotunheim.
You will need to build the Seer’s hut whenever it becomes available. The quest chain that opens up by building this building is separate and can be done at any time, so if you prefer to build something else knowingly delaying a fantastic stand-alone story arc for Eivor, by all means – do it. The story will always be available for you to enjoy, even after you complete everything else.
The Cult of a Thousand Eyes
The Cult of a Thousand Eyes is a trading post that gives your rare items and collectibles. Next to that the Cult also functions as a contractgiver for sidemissions like carrying out assassinations for who knows what reason. But also altruistic missions where you help someone purely out of altruistic reasons.
The Cult of a Thousand Eyes at Ravensthorpe will be represented by Reda. If you have played AC Odyssey, you may find this shop very vamiliar. Reda is somehow magically available to you centuries later after you first met him in Ancient Egypt.
This establishment is a source of incredible gear both in terms of visuals and performance. Learn more about this building and its functions in a separate guide I have about Reda’s Shop and how to find Opal in AC Valhalla.
Tattoo Shop
The tattoo shop at Ravensthorpe will open up more customization options for Eivor. You will have access to more hair and tattoo options.
All kinds of hairstyles from long to short and anything inbetween. Same goes for the tattoos, you have seen the default ones in Norway but there is another reason to explore the mysteries and chestlooting: You can find new styles and colors. The shop is run by Svend and Tove.
The Shipyard
By unlocking the shipyard you will gain access to customization for your Longboat. You can modify just about everything from the hull, sail, shields, figurehead, to the tailpiece of your ship.
The Museum
The museum is there mostly for the aesthetics. You can trade your Roman artifacts for little decorative statues for your camp. Building the museum will also trigger a small questline.
What you get from a fully leveled Settlement
Once you finally reach Level 6 of your Settlement, Ravensthorpe will become a bustling town and powerful player in the diplomatic landscape.
The last few farms upgrades are very costly and you may have to farm some resources. To lessen the grind and save yourself some time, be sure to always scan with Odin’s Sight every location you explore.
Some resource chests are not going to be shown on your map and some will be marked as little (almost insignificant) yellow dots.
The best benefit, in my opinion, are the additional items you get in the Shop – Tungsten Ingots to upgrade your gear to the Mythical tier. And you can also purchase Scrolls of Knowledge. Each one of these gives you +1 Skill Point directly upon purchasing.
Let’s not forget the square runes! Square rune slots are only available on the highest tiers of chest armor pieces and weapons. They provide a specific and unique perk that can perfectly fit your desired build. Square runes are hard to come by. You get them from defeating Lost Drengr warriors, Zealots and other tough opponents and bosses.
What is the Feast Mechanic in AC Valhalla
How do you feast? Well if you look closely on the “long side” of your Longhouse you will notice a big bell. You ring it and town folk will gather for a feast while telling stories of the latest raid or whether or not they should social distance during the feast.
Other buildings that you can build but do not have a big impact like the ones explained above are the following:
- Mayda’s House
- Kari’s House
- Hunwald and Swanburrow’s House
- Bakery
- Brewery
- Fowl Farm
- Cattle Farm
- Grain Farm
All of the above buildings add up to the buff you can gain by feasting. More specifically you will get the following:
- Bakery:+25 Health
- Brewery:+25 Health
- Cattle Farm:+3.0 Ranged Damage
- Fowl Farm:+3.0 Melee Damage
- Grain Farm:+3.0 Armor
- Alvis and Holger’s House:+3.0 Assassination Damage
- Hunwald and Swanburrow’s House: +3.0 Assassination Damage
The Farms can be upgraded after their are built, which will increase the bonuses they provide. Their upgrades also grant you more Settlement XP.
Here is a preview of what the Feast Buff looks like with all buildings built and all farms fully upgraded for the Settlement to reach Level 6:
You can inspect the buff’s duration and bonuses while it is in effect by opening your Inventory. The buff’s icon is above the bag in the top right. Note that the timer stands still while you are in menus and not playing. Three hours of pure gameplay time for 60/65 Silver is a great value.
Maybe it will not seem so to you at first, but Silver will start piling up later as you progress through the game’s world. Don’t forget to collect anything that has a sticker and a pop-up notification :)))
