It’s a well-known tradition for the vast majority of Assassin’s Creed games to be announced with a CGI trailer. While some of these trailers are used as in-game cutscenes, most of them are completely independent of their attached games and exist only to give fans a taste of what to expect from the tone and story. What makes these trailers unique is that they’re essentially mini-movies.

Each trailer has a beginning, middle, end, and has a very simple plot that’s told in roughly five minutes. While CGI trailers are largely criticized by gamers for their lack of gameplay, the Assassin’s Creed trailers have avoided this criticism by being great sources of entertainment in their own right.

10 Assassin’s Creed Origins
Set to Leonard Cohen’s “You Want It Darker,” the trailer for Assassin’s Creed Origins begins at a slower pace than most. It highlights the majesty and beauty of Ancient Egypt, while also depicting the haughty arrogance of those in power. Things really kick off when the game’s protagonist Bayek attacks a nobleman and his entourage.
What follows isn't a quick or clean assassination, but a brutal brawl that Bayek barely survives through some quick thinking. Origins was a complete overhaul of the franchise and the brutal tone of this trailer highlights this. While it lingers a little too long on the Egyptian iconography, it’s still an entertaining trailer.
9 Assassin’s Creed III
The trailer for Assassin’s Creed III opens with a bald eagle observing the American Revolution, while Connor Kenway’s narration paints a less-than-sparkling picture of the revolutionaries. The eagle then takes off and seems to transform into Connor, who bravely charges a redcoat camp. What follows is an impressive fight scene.

After taking out legions of soldiers, Connor dispatches the redcoat leader who he reveals to be a Templar. This hints at a darker conflict between ancient enemies using the revolution as a smokescreen. With this tantalizing taste of things to come, plus an impressive showing from the game’s protagonist, the trailer expertly makes fans intrigued by what Assassin’s Creed III will offer.
8 Assassin’s Creed II
Assassin’s Creed II is a fan-favorite entry in the series, and its CGI trailer is full of the spectacle such an entry deserves. Set in Venice in 1486, the trailer followers protagonist Ezio Auditore dispatching his targets under the cover of a lavish festival. When confronted by guards, Ezio shows off his impressive fighting skills but also some surprising mercy.
One of his targets escapes Ezio’s initial attack and attempts to lure him into a trap. Just when it looks like the plan might work, Ezio takes the man out from afar with the new hidden gun. The trailer does an excellent job of showing off not just the protagonist, but Assassin's Creed II’s setting.
7 Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood
Moving the setting to Rome, Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood is a direct sequel to Assassin’s Creed II. The audience sees Ezio approach his target completely out in the open, but things aren’t as simple as they appear. While Ezio is just as capable a fighter as ever, many of his assailants seem to fall before getting anywhere near him.
At the trailer’s climax, the trick gets revealed as a small army of Assassins stands with Ezio against their imposing adversary. Both armies rush towards each other in an ending that compels the viewer to play the game. By showing off the game’s key mechanic in such a cinematic way, this trailer drummed up tons of interest for Brotherhood.
6 Assassin’s Creed: Revelations
The third entry in the “Ezio Trilogy,” Assassin’s Creed: Revelations has a darker trailer than most AC games. Set to Woodkid’s “Iron,” the trailer portrays a much older Ezio in prison. As he’s dragged out to his fate, the trailer reveals the fight that led to this situation.
While age clearly hasn't dulled Ezio’s edge, he’s eventually brought to his knees by the overwhelming odds. Just as it appears he’s about to be executed, Ezio gives one more fight right when the trailer ends. Fans invested in Ezio’s story were all-but guaranteed to buy the game after the cliffhanger ending.
5 Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag
One of the franchise’s most beloved entries, Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag is set in the Age of Piracy and stars Edward Kenway. The trailer opens with him and his crew hanging out in a tavern when a Spanish captain walks in. Starting a bar fight as cover, Edward kills the captain and steals something from him.

The captain’s allies pursue Edward and his crew out to sea, leading to one of the game’s famous ship battles. Edward then sneaks onto the opposing ship and takes out its captain with a combination of an assassin’s guile and a pirate’s brutality. The trailer perfectly sells Black Flag’s fantasy of a pirate adventure with AC’s trademark stealth and subterfuge.
4 Assassin’s Creed: Syndicate
Set in 1868 London, the trailer for Assassin’s Creed: Syndicate is perhaps the most “movie-like.” The trailer follows Jacob Frye and his Rooks gang as they attempt to rescue a group of children from a sweatshop. The trailer has a different tone, and some may not realize it’s an Assassin’s Creed trailer until Jacob dons the iconic hood.
Jacob is very unsubtle, engaging in daring carriage chases and brutal brawls set to Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds' "In the Heat Of The Moment." However, Jacob shows the cunning of an assassin, and the heart to win the loyalty of his gang. The trailer for Assassin’s Creed: Syndicate has some thrilling action sequences, but it largely omits Jacob’s sister Evie.
3 Assassin’s Creed: Unity
The trailer for Assassin’s Creed: Unity takes a similar approach as Brotherhood’s trailer, but does it much more successfully. The trailer uses the French Revolution as a backdrop while Arno Dorian and his three allies stalk their target. Using a violent riot as cover, the four Assassins take on their quarry’s army of bodyguards to Lorde’s excellent cover of “Everybody Wants To Rule The World.”
While Arno is the game’s protagonist, all four Assassins are given plenty of time to shine, each showing off unique abilities and personality despite no dialogue. The fight scene is excellently choreographed and delivers a satisfying conclusion. While Unity has a bit of a mixed reception, this trailer is one of AC’s best.
2 Assassin’s Creed: Mirage
The trailer for Assassin’s Creed: Mirage stands out for showing a very satisfying character arc for protagonist Basim Ibn Ishaq. The trailer depicts Basim as a young street thief who unsuccessfully attempts to escape some guards. Basim is then rescued by an Assassin who trains him in her ways.
RELATED: 10 Times Assassin's Creed Games Broke Their Own Rules
The trailer shows Basim as a fully fledged Assassin who is much more competent at dealing with guards now. His transformation is brought home by the triumphant playing of “Ezio’s Family” as Basim effortlessly takes out his target. The trailer for Assassin’s Creed: Mirage is an excellent introduction for a game aiming to take the franchise back to its roots.
1 Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla
Assassin’s Creed’s best trailer is for arguably its most divisive game: Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla. The trailer shows Eivor and their clan of Vikings living nobly in contrast with a narration that calls them savages. The narrator is revealed to be King Alfred the Great, who vows to “speak to them in a language they will understand.”
The Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla trailer ends with a glorious battle that's as brutal and bloody as any conflict with Vikings should be. Just when it seems as if Eivor is about to meet their end at the hands of a massive opponent, they defeat their assailant with the iconic Hidden Blade. It’s a thrilling trailer that got plenty of fans excited.
